If you've ever needed an excuse to eat chocolate and peppermint, today you have it.
In 1940, Henry C. Kessler began selling peppermint cream covered in a dark chocolate patty. He named it after the city of York, Pennsylvania, where he lived. It is unknown if February 11, 1940, is the day it first went on sale or was invented.
It remained a regional treat until 1972 when Peter Paul Candy Manufacturing Company purchased Kessler's company and took the product national in 1975.
In 1978, Peter Paul merged with Cadbury, which Hershey acquired in 1988.
