DESCRIPTION:
Preparation for Lent, the 40 days leading up to Easter, traditionally involved removing from one’s kitchen of all rich and dairy foods like milk, butter and eggs.
Pancake Day (Shrove Tuesday) and Pancake Week evolved from this tradition. Pancakes are made with butter, milk, eggs and flour. Better to use the ingredients rather than throw them out.
Pancake Week occurs during the seven days leading up to the first day of Lent, which is Ash Wednesday. It runs concurrent with Carnaval and Mardi Gras. In the United States it is a full week. In the commonwealth countries it is the day before Ash Wednesday.
