In 1935, the first Sunday of August was declared World Friendship Day by Proclamation in the US Congress. Later the United Nations declared Winnie the Pooh as the official Ambassador for Friendship.
India and the United States observe this day on the first Sunday in August. The rest of the world observes it on July 30 as International Day of Friendship. Both events are created by the United Nations. Dates of observance vary by nation.
