Fibromyalgia Education & Awareness Month occurs in May each year. It was started by California- based National Fibromyalgia Association. Today it is supported by the Pharmacists Planning Service.
Fibromyalgia is a complex chronic pain disorder that affects an estimated 10 million people in the U.S. and an estimated 3-6% of the world’s population. While fibromyalgia (FM) can also occur in men and children of all ethnic groups, 75-90% of those that have this disorder are women.
Those with fibromyalgia experience chronic widespread body pain as well as moderate to extreme fatigue, sleep disturbances and cognitive difficulties. Often they are sensitive to touch, light and sound and can develop irritable bowel syndrome, lupus and arthritis.
This month is about focusing awareness on fibromyalgia and creating increased understanding of the disease and the struggles its victims deal with on a daily basis.
