About the Buddhist Holiday of Vesak

DESCRIPTION:
Vesak, or Wesak is commonly referred to as Buddha Day. This is the day the Buddhist faith marks the dawning of the age of enlightenment known as Nirvāna. The exact date varies depending upon country and traditions. The most common date is this. It is based upon the moon and the sun’s position; however, it falls on the full moon in Vaisakha, a month of the Buddhist calendar that is also shared by Hindus.
Buddhist mark this day with meditation, observing the eight precepts, partaking in vegetarianism, giving to charity and 'bathing' Buddha statues. Traditionally, Buddhists set this day aside to bring happiness to the unfortunate, which can include the elderly, handicapped and sick. They do so through the distribution of gifts or cash to various charitable homes throughout the country.
Vesak became an official Buddhist holiday in 1950; it parallels in importance to the Christian celebration of Christmas and Muslim celebration of Eid al-Fitr.
