Black Family Month is an unofficial observance each July created by Shaun McLaughlin in New York specifically to focus on the needs of Black families and utilize the tradition of family reunions during the month of may to get the community involved by supplying free health services, education and entertainment opportunities.
Families are encouraged to do activities together such as reading, family dinners and classes and attend to annual check-ups. Any activity that makes a family stronger is appropriate for celebrating Black Family Month.
The organizers are no longer available for this event; however, tradition has it on the calendar and it continues to be observed by Black families throughout the country.
