National Anisette Day celebrates the anisette, an anise-based liquor. Though it is not advisable to drink anisette on its own, this liqueur provides a sweet tinge when mixed with other spirits.
Anisette is popular in the Mediterranean countries and France. People celebrate this occasion by ordering drinks that includes this liqueur or bake some anisette cookies.
Anise has long been known to have medicinal properties. The Egyptians, Romans and Greeks used it to aid digestion, bad breath and flatulence. Anise is also mentioned in the Bible as proof that one should not be stingy in the offerings to the Lord. This herb was used a currency during Roman times. It is the flavor found in black licorice.
