Anne and Samantha Day occurs on the Summer and Winter Solstice to honor the work of two young women who died too young and to push for postage stamps to commemorate their contributions to world peace and understanding.
Anne is for Anne Frank, the author of the Diary of Anne Frank. Anne died in a concentration camp less than two months before WWII ended in Europe, and she was just sixteen years old.
Samantha is for Samantha Smith, who is known as the world's youngest ambassador. She wrote a letter to the head of the Soviet Union, Yuri Andropov, congratulating him on his new job and hoping to bring an understanding to the Cold War. After a couple of letters, she finally received an answer from the leader and an invitation to visit, from which she wrote a book. Samantha died on August 25, 1985, in a plane crash at age 13.
