Bagpipe Appreciation Day honors the Highlands Scottish Bagpipe.
A Scottish tradition, the bagpipe is used for a number of events including announcing the start a battle, announcing births, weddings and funerals. On this day, Scottish heritage groups hold bagpipe performances in their town squares or halls.
Bagpipes originated in the Middle East about 600 before the time of Christ. Though Asian in origin, this instrument is now symbolic of the Scottish Highlands.
The bags are crafted from sheep or elk skin. Three pipes are connected to this sac, which fills with air. Sound comes out as the air is released by pressing against the arm of the musician. The pitch and the chords are controlled by a fourth pipe with nine holes.
