Gay and Lesbian Pride Month commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Riots in Manhattan. During this month throughout the United States there are pride parades, workshops, symposiums and concerts that focus on the LGBT experience. Memorials are also held for those who lost battle against HIV.
The Stonewall Riot occurred at the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar, in Greenwich, New York in June 1969.
Prior to the Stonewall Riot, authorities raided gay and lesbian bars across the countries under the impression that the said bars were violating local liquor ban. Many were arrested and oftentimes their names were published on the dailies that resulted to dire consequences. However, in June 1969, patrons of Stonewall Inn resisted the police harassment which led to a movement that encouraged outlawing practices against the LGBT community.
In 1998, President Clinton signed the Executive Order 13087 that indicated that there should be equal opportunities for gays and lesbians in the Federal government. On June 2000 Proclamation 7316 was signed by the same US president that declared June as the Gay and Lesbian Pride Month. On June 1, 2009, President Obama issued Proclamation No 8387 that states June as the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month. The President noted the contributions of the LGBT community to the progress of anti-discrimination based on sexual orientation and the initiatives made to reduce the HIV pandemic.
