World Refugee Day highlights the plight, strength, and courage of millions of refugees worldwide.
Although not declared a public holiday, the world observes it to emphasize the situation of refugees for a day or an entire week.
On December 4, 2000, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 20 World Refugee Day under Resolution 55/76, starting in 2001, the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention regarding the Status of Refugees, coinciding with Africa Refugee Day.
Amnesty International and International Rescue Committee organize activities that include protests against the detention of migrants and asylum seekers and petitions to various government organizations on caring for refugees in detention.
