On April 9, 1938, thousands of Tunisians took to the streets of Tunis, protesting French colonial rule and demanding a Tunisian parliament on their behalf. The French put down the protest, shooting into the crowd and killing 20 people. Martyrs' Day marks this event and commences the fight for independence.
