It is a holy day solemnly commemorating the receiving of the Holy Eucharist (communion). The feast was first practiced in 1306 in Cologne and was introduced in England from Belgium between 1320 and 1325.
The feast is also known in the Orthodox churches of the Syrians, Armenians, Copts, Melchites, and Ruthenians of Galicia, Calabria, and Sicily.
