Red Rose Day celebrates the official flower of June, the rose. Legend has it that the gift of a red rose is a declaration of true love; in fact, the name 'rose' is a derivative of the Greek god Eros, who had Cupid's power to make people fall in love. When struck with his love potion, a rose bush would grow in their place.
The red rose symbol is recognized the world over. In 1986 roses were declared the official flower and floral emblem of the United States.
Red Rose Day is an unofficial event with no sponsor.
