Arising from the ashes of the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center, the first Tribeca Film Festival occurred in the spring of 2002 and is the brainchild of Jane Rosenthal, Robert De Niro, and Craig Hatkoff.
The festival helped revitalize lower Manhattan after the attacks and provided a high-profile venue for independent filmmakers to showcase their work on various issues.
By 2006 the festival received over 8,600 film submissions and held 1,500 screenings.
In 2013 it drew more than three million people and generated more than US$ 600 million.
