Disability Dignity Month focuses on the 30% of Americans with a physical or mental disability. It celebrates the unique culture of various disability communities and their achievements. Advocates hope to teach the general population to avoid terms considered ableist. Ableist language uses common words tied to a disability that can be seen in a derogatory context. Examples include saying retarded instead of mentally impaired. Blind instead of saying vision impaired, or dumb instead of mute.
The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law on July 26, 1990. Due to the anniversary, July is chosen as Disability Dignity Month; some refer to this event as Disability Pride Month.
