DESCRIPTION:
Hippopotami, or hippos, are the world's third largest animal by weight (after the whale and elephant). Their name is Greek for 'river horse,' and they do spend hours a day submerged in water. Each animal can weigh up to 8,000 pounds, and as herbivores, they play an essential role in the ecosystem. A hippo in the wild typically lives about 40 years.
