DESCRIPTION:
National Gumbo Day celebrates the stew of a distinctively flavored meat or shellfish, and seasoned vegetables common in the Southern United States. The name comes from the West African word for okra, gumbo. Okra is used as a thickener for the stew. This dish first made its appearance at the end of the 18th Century.
