Though the origins of this event are unknown, since 2015 San Francisco lawyer has adopted this day as a venue to raise awareness about hunger and homelessness.
The event has been moved from February 20, to a weekend, thus allowing people to take part in 'spreading the muffins' as muffinteers. This is how that started.
Even without fanfare, Jacob Kaufman, the muffin man in San Francisco, weekly hands out muffins to the homeless. His example has inspired others around the world to do the same. Together with college Julia Levy in Atlanta, the two have taken a frivolous national food day and turned it into a community focused initiative.
