Like Canadian bacon (which isn't Canadian), the English muffin technically is not English. It is American, though the man who created it, Samuel Bath Thomas (1855–1919), was an English immigrant (1874) to the United States.
In 1880, his New York bakery began creating its signature griddle muffin. In 1902 he added the name 'English,' and the English muffin was born. National English Muffin Day is the annual event celebrating Thomas' delicious invention.
