UNESCO sponsors the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition.
This observance focuses on the history and plight of slaves allowing people to remember how the slave trade worked and the consequences of such actions. It marks the anniversary of August 13, 1791, when slaves revolted in Saint Dominique, now known as Haiti.
