International Mountain Day began in 1992 with Chapter 13 of "Managing Fragile Ecosystems: Sustainable Mountain Development" during the UN Conference on Environment and Development.
In 2003, the UN designated December 11 as the day to celebrate International Mountain Day. The previous year, 1992, was declared the UN International Year of the Mountains.
