National Kraut and Frankfurter Week has existed since at least 1949 (the earliest official written instance we could find) and is an initiative of the National Kraut Packers Association. The Ohio-based organizations championing sauerkraut and other Germanic foods are no longer in existence. Still, their legacy remains in the Reuben Sandwich, dozens of classic recipe books, and of course, this week.
