National Average Joe Day celebrates the everyday man and his impact on the world.
The actual origin of the day is still being determined. Still, the term refers to the medium American: A middle-class man who is high school educated and works hard while caring for his family. To be an average Joe is to avoid making waves, and it is a man who blends in and leads an ordinary life. Joe was first used to denote the average man in 1841. During the 20th century, "average Joe" took on a new life picking up additional adjectives including GI Joe, Joe Schmoe, Joe Beige, Joe Lunch Bucket, Joe Sad, Joe Six Pack, Joe Yale, Joe Zilch, and the not-so-average Joe Cool.
The US Social Security Administration lists Joseph in the top 10 names for boys going back to the 1880s. It fell into the top 20 during the 1940s and re-entered the top 10 in the 1980s before falling to its lowest point of 19 in 2010.
