Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency is a genetic illness that affects lung and/or liver disease at various stages in one's life. Essentially, it is a protein produced in the liver. This protein acts to protect lung tissue by dissolving damaged/aging cells and harmful bacteria. It is essential to healthy lungs and the ability to breathe.
Identifying this disease in patients early is essential to promoting a long and healthy life of those who have it. This month is an awareness campaign to alert the public, make treatments known and encourage people to get tested.
