International Fire Fighters’ Day (IFFD) is a time where the world’s community recognize and honor the sacrifices that fire fighters make to ensure that their communities and environment are as safe as possible.
It is also a day current and retired fire fighters can be thanked for their service. Show your support by proudly wearing and displaying blue and red ribbons pinned together or by participating in a memorial or recognition event.
Firefighter became a occupation at the time of Jesus in ancient Rome under Augustus Cesar. Many communities through the ages have supported volunteer fire departments in the absence of full-time departments. George Washington, the first President of the United States, was at one time, a volunteer fire fighter.
May 4th was chosen as the day to honor fire fighters as it is the Feast of St. Florian. Saint Florian is the patron saint of fire fighters.
