The Gay Games is an international sporting and cultural event that promotes acceptance, inclusion, and the celebration of the LGBTQ+ community. Founded by Dr. Tom Waddell, an Olympic decathlete, the first Gay Games took place in San Francisco in 1982.
The event was initially called the Gay Olympics, but due to a legal dispute with the International Olympic Committee, the name changed to the Gay Games.
Held every four years, the Gay Games brings together athletes, artists, and activists worldwide to participate in various sporting and cultural events. The event's primary goals are to foster understanding, respect, and acceptance for LGBTQ+ individuals, encourage personal growth and self-discovery, and promote unity and camaraderie among participants.
