The Youth Winter Olympics, officially known as the Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG), is an international multi-sport event organized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for young athletes aged between 15 and 18 every four years to promote sportsmanship, cultural exchange, and education among the participating youth from around the world. The Winter YOG features competitions in various winter sports disciplines, similar to the senior Winter Olympic Games.
The idea for the Youth Olympic Games began with former IOC president Jacques Rogge in 2001 to inspire younger generations to participate in sports and embrace Olympic values. The inaugural Winter Youth Olympic Games took place in Innsbruck, Austria, in 2012. The 2024 games will be the fourth edition.
The Winter YOG showcases many of the same sports as the senior Winter Olympic Games, including alpine skiing, snowboarding, ice hockey, figure skating, speed skating, short track, curling, biathlon, cross-country skiing, ski jumping, Nordic combined, and more.
The Winter YOG also serves as a platform for young athletes to gain experience in international competitions, potentially paving the way for their participation in future senior Olympic Games. In addition to sports competitions, the event features a rich cultural and educational program, the Culture and Education Programme (CEP), designed to foster personal growth, social responsibility, and Olympic values among the athletes.
