October 4, 1957 Sputnik I was launched by Soviet Union, kicking off the Space Race that would culminate in the July 1969 moon landing. To mark all achievements in space, the United Nations declared in 1999, World Space Week. It has grown into the largest public space event on Earth. More than 3,700 events in 80 countries celebrated the benefits of space. It occurs annually the week of October 4-10 to celebrate the launch of Sputnik.
