Falling on the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, International Day of Nowruz (also spelled Noruz) is also noted by the United Nations General Assembly as a cultural observance. This is the Shi'a new year. It is celebrated in Afghanistan, Albania, Azerbaijan, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, India, Iran (Islamic Republic of), Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey and Turkmenistan.
