DESCRIPTION:
During the Russian civil war, on February 17, 1918 the first major draft of soldiers into the new Red Army occurred in Petrograd and Moscow. On the 23rd of February, the Red Army was officially established.
This day marks that anniversary. It has had several different names over the years and has been celebrated on different days. The current Defender of the Fatherland holiday was added to the official Russian holiday calendar by President Vladimir Putin in 2002.
