It is believed that World Sauntering Day started in the Grand Hotel in Mackinac, Michigan in 1979, the hotel with the longest porch in the world at the time.
The event was created by W.T. Rabe as a response to the increasing popularity of joggers in the area as a way of encouraging people to appreciate the world around us by taking things slow.
