Public Service Day was declared by the UN General Assembly to raise awareness about the value of public service and how it contributes to the society. The objective of this day is to encourage young people to explore and pursue careers in public service.
Public Service Day was first recognized by the UN December 20, 2002.
Each year since, a Public Service Awards ceremony is held recognizing the contributions of exemplary public servants.
