South Africa commemorates Women's Month in August as a backdrop to increased violence and brutality against women and children in our society.
The month-long awareness campaign commemorates the anniversary of the 20,000-strong Women's March to the Union Buildings on August 9, 1956. The women protested against the extension of Pass Laws. The march was a turning point in the role of women in the struggle for freedom and society at large, and it drew women of all races, social classes, and economic levels.
