National Fried Clam Day marks the anniversary of this bar appetizer favorite arriving on the world culinary stage in 1916 via Lawrence Henry and Bessey Woodman's small store, Woodman's in Essex, Massachusetts.
Like many now familiar foods, fried clams were somewhat of an accident. Chatting with friends, the couple was trying to figure out how to get more business into their store. A friend suggested they fry the clams they had yet to shuck. At first, it seemed silly. Clams have shells. But, when the shells were removed, the meat dipped in batter and served hot, suddenly a new East Coast favorite snack was born. They tested out their fried clams the next day at the 4th of July celebration and the rest is history.
Today, over 100 years later, you can still get the original fried clams at Woodman's. This event has been marked since 2015.
