July 8, 2011 marks the day the Republic of South Sudan became a state. On July 9, 2011 after a 98.83% votes in a previous referendum and agreement, it declared its independence from Sudan and ended the longest civil war in Africa.
South Sudan established Juba as its capital. The small country is bordered by Sudan to the north, Ethiopia to the east, Uganda to the south, Kenya to its southeast, Central African Republic to the west and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the southwest.
