World Spinal Cord Injury seeks to increase awareness and facilitate life inclusion for persons with paralysis and spinal cord injuries.
One of the most devastating conditions physically, mentally, socially, sexually, and vocationally, spinal cord injuries affect every part of life. The economic costs are enormous, both in treatment and lost wages averaging between $334,000 - 1 million dollars in expenses in the first year after the injury and ongoing expenses of $41,000 to $178,000/year for life.
The majority of spinal cord injuries are preventable. Basic safety procedures such as always wearing a seat belt, never driving under the influence, keeping your home clean and clutter-free, and always wearing a helmet when biking, skating, or skateboarding can prevent injury. When out and about, visually inspect playground equipment before using it, don't run on wet surfaces, and use your smartphone's flashlight after dark so people can see you.
