Like Festivus from "Seinfeld," Wear Something Gaudy Day originated with a comment by a character on a popular television show, in this case, the affable Larry Dallas on the sitcom "Three's Company."
The wildly popular show followed three twenty-something roommates, two women, and a man, living in Santa Monica, California. At the time, it was considered scandalous for a heterosexual male to be roommates with two women.
Today cohabitation is pretty standard, especially in high-rent areas like Los Angeles suburb Santa Monica and New York City, where rents run in the several thousands of dollars per month, even for a low-end apartment.
