International Migrant's Day occurs before the Christmas holiday and honors migrants and their tremendous courage. People migrate for several reasons. Some are fleeing war, environmental destruction, or political situations, and others are seeking a better life with more opportunities, seeking religious tolerance, or joining the family.

On September 19, 2016, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a set of commitments during its first-ever summit on large movements of refugees and migrants to enhance the protection of refugees and migrants.
