Freedom of Information (FOI) Day is an annual event on or near March 16, the birthday of James Madison. Madison is widely regarded as the Father of the US Constitution and the foremost advocate for government transparency.
Freedom of Information Day is hosted annually by the First Amendment Center. It includes a conference in partnership with the American Library Association, the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, OMB Watch, OpenTheGovernment.org, and the National Security Archive at George Washington University.
The event is also part of the annual Sunshine Week Initiative sponsored by the American Society of News Editors and the Reporters Committee.
