National Courtesy Month is an unofficial event with no set sponsor. Courtesy evolved from the English word "curtsey," a form of bowing first practiced with enthusiasm in the 16th Century.
Courtesy is the set of cultural rules a given society lives by. No matter where you are, some of these are universal. Every culture in the world uses a form of "Please," "Thank you," "You're welcome," and "Excuse me." These are considered universal.
Each society, however, has its own rules governing other behaviors, such as who can speak first, whether to shake hands and when, how to conduct eating rituals, and more.
National Common Courtesy Month is your opportunity to discover the common courtesies of your culture and possibly learn a few from another.
