National Preparedness Month was created in 2004 and sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) under the Department of Homeland Security to encourage people to prepare homes and businesses for emergencies. The outreach informs and educates the public on responding to emergencies, including natural occurrences and terrorist attacks.
