National Submarine Day in the United States marks the anniversary of the US Navy’s acquisition of its first modern submarine, the Holland VI, on April 11, 1900.
The Holland VI is not the first submarine to fight for the United States, however. The USS Alligator was deployed on June 13, 1862, during the American Civil War by Union forces and foundered on April 2, 1863. It was the fourth American naval vessel to carry its name.
Prior to this, Colonial forces during the Revolutionary War used a human-powered submersible vehicle called the Turtle to wage war against the British Navy in New York harbor in 1776. The Turtle was the first submersible vehicle used in combat.
