Ely Eel Festival in the United Kingdom celebrates the fish and its place in English culture over the weekend of Eel Day.
The town of Ely holds an eel festival each year that includes folk music, parades, eel pottery workshops, music and dancing, historical displays and re-enactments, and lots of time to sample what was once a staple food in the Fens: smoked and jellied eels as well as more conventional forms of food.
Highlights included the British Town Crier Championship and the World Eel Throwing Competition (no eels were harmed in this competition, just stuffed toys).
