National Pop Goes the Weasel Day commemorates the nursery rhyme "Pop Goes the Weasel."
This nursery rhyme is around 400 years old and originated as a dance; lyrics were added later. By the 19th century, it evolved into a children's game.
In 1961, Anthony Newly, a British singer, recorded a pop version of this rhyme, and it reached number 12 on the United Kingdom singles chart.
Children sing the song while forming a ring with one player in the middle to play the game. The person in the middle is the weasel. The children rush to create new rings when the line "Pop goes the weasel" is said. The last person to join falls out of the game, which is repeated until only one player is left.
