Cherry Turnover Day celebrates the pastry, the cherry turnover. A turnover is a baked pastry fashioned in a triangle stuffed with a sweet or savory filling.
The turnover has been around since Roman times and could be considered the first portable sandwich. In ancient times, turnovers were usually filled with meats. Types of turnovers from around the world whose names you may be familiar with include Calzones, Samosas, Pierogies, Dim Sum, Empanadas, and Pastelitos.
Seventy-five percent of the cherries sold in the United States are grown in Michigan.
