DESCRIPTION:
International Day Against Nuclear Testing is an awareness campaign created by the United Nations under Resolution 64/35 in December 2009. This day calls for awareness and information about the effects of nuclear weapon explosions, the need to stop them, and the goal of a nuclear-free world.
Initiated by the nation of Kazakhstan, this date coincides with the closure of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site on August 29, 1991.
The 1996 Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty created a treaty to end nuclear testing. The treaty has yet to be implemented.
