Imagine life without the paper bag. We use them for lunch, insulation, doggy bags, and airline nausea reduction receptacles. They carry groceries, provide easy gift wrapping, hold fried or popped food, and can even calm us down when we're hyperventilating. They are a fantastic invention first created by Francis Wolle on August 16, 1852, and perfected by Margaret E. Knight with U.S. Patent 116,842 (Improvement in Paper-Bag Machines, July 11, 1871.)
July 11 is the anniversary of the square bottom paper bag used worldwide and is, therefore, International Paper Bag Day. It is also a celebration of female inventors, of which Ms. Knight excelled.
