Milkshake, the word, first appeared in 1885, and the concoction was combined with whisky and resembled the eggnog of today. By the beginning of the twentieth century, milkshakes had evolved into a wholesome treat of milk, ice cream, and flavored syrup. The invention of the blender moved milkshakes closer to what we know today, and they became a mainstay of soda fountains and later fast-food restaurants in the decades to come.
