National Marrow Awareness Month occurs in November and acknowledges the success of the transplant physicians and researchers. Bone marrow transplant procedures, using the stem cells of the donor, have save thousands of lives.
E. Donnall Thomas is the doctor responsible for bone marrow transplants, a discovery for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize. The first operation was performed in 1956.
